Recycling your old nets WOYWW 346

Today I thought about moving on some more of my stash -this time laces and nets. I have used these for lots of embroidery projects in the past but in no way could I ever use all I have so I am making up transfer painting packs with papers I have painted using transfer inks - this is the technique I used to make the fabric for the little treasure box  on the blog last November .

The colour on the papers changes when it is transferred to the fabrics and some fabrics take the dyes better than others because of the fibre content so the outcome can be a bit random. They are great for colouring those man-made fabrics that you can't find a use for anymore. This is a removable book cover I also made using this method.

Now I am going to write an instruction sheet to to with the packs so I have to do some thinking - time for a coffee.

Just in case anyone is interested - here is the completed hat from last week - not on my head for the pic - and yes I have worn it.

Recycled Sweater - WOYWW 345

This morning I have started to make a hat from one of my old jumpers. It has pilled and felted a bit but since it was one of my favourites it deserved a second life. I have used a hat I made a while ago as the template because it's a style that can be worn as a beret or a more upright hat. Having now got my needle felting thingy that I used on the mouse I have decided to add needle-felted blobs and cut jumper circles which I will apply with free-machining.

Here is a close up of my previous hat which was made from felted knitting (done especially) with felt knitting applique and free-machine embroidery.

By the way the conservatory was finally finished on Monday - no thanks to all the rain. I am in the middle of sorting out all my art stuff ready to put back now and can't wait to get back to some painting. Now I'm going to do a bit of desk hopping to other WOYWW folk whilst I have my coffee.

Knitted Sculpture

Here is my finished necklace/scarf. Yes Knitting Nancy is not just for kids. Want to try it on a much larger scale check then this out- it was created by 'Superblues' and sited at Canary Wharf in 2010.

Or on a slightly smaller scale - this is by artist Lauren Mullarkey.

Or still want to use needles?  This is Christien Meinderstma working on a part of a project called 'Design for a Living World' for The Nature Conservancy and made with wool from an organic flock of Panama sheep from Lava Lake Ranch, Idaho.
I have followed the art of Brazilian Ernesto Neto for many years and this is his work Hyper Culture Madness in the Vertigo World - brilliant.

Another guy - this time Italian artist Ivano Vitali who knits and crochets using yarn made from strips of found materials, such as newspapers and phonebooks, with no glue, colouring or added water. He has been experimenting with recycled paper since the 1970s.

So carry on making interesting and not boring stuff and try not to damage the planet.

Knitting & Stitching - WOYWW 344

Working space for me is limited at the moment because we are having the conservatory roof replaced and all that art stuff had to go elsewhere. My men arrived whilst it was still dark but at least I was dressed. So at the moment I am finishing off the 'necklace ' I started last week. As you can see this is not going to be in anyway subtle but it is using up oddments of wool which I now have knitted into one long tube. Just a few more bindings and then knit the 'cuff' in yellow I think and a couple of buttons. I will post the finished result - it's looking a bit snake like at the moment.

So here is my view of the work outside in progress - please no more rain!

Now gonna have a whizz round other workdesks to see what's in progress. If you want to join in click here
