Using up bits of wool WOYWW 350

Today I'm working on the little table in the conservatory adding even more colour to the bright green (brighter than you see here) finger-less gloves I've just knitted. This is my box of small scraps of 'woolly threads' which are too short for most projects but I can't throw them away. I could have done with these a couple of years ago when I became sensitive to light and wore gloves and a hijab like scarf all summer. That's when Christine, aka Bishopsmate, first met me - slightly overdressed in the library.

Here is another hat I've just finished using woolly scraps  - it's reversible. The base is made out of netting from a bag of satsumas woven into whilst stretched over a ball - I got to use those really chunky threads on this.

Yesterday at our craft group Christine said I had to give you a pic of the papier maché figure I was doing last week. So here she is with her orange, handbag, hair and shoes - that's one of my large canvasses in the background.

Have a good week. Jackie

Paper Maché WOYWW 349

Last week I got together with the other 3 artists shedders for a paper maché play day - the aim being to get some ideas for our seed project - so today I am finishing off what I had started. Just for fun I made a figure from a wire coat hanger which I initially bulked out with card stuck onto it with masking tape. The base is a couple of pieces of card, which I pushed the legs through, covered with pulp made from paper kitchen towel, pva and a spot of polyfilla to make it firm. Legs and arms were also done with the tissue and the body from newspaper.

Not sure how I'm going to paint it yet - need to mull it over all I know is she is going to have orange hair, a handbag and statement shoes. I also made a fish - the body was scrunched up newspaper formed into the rough shape with masking tape and then I added cardboard fin and tail.

The seed part for me was making these pod-like structures from wire gauze and kitchen towel. These are going to be joined to make one 'pod' after a couple more layers. I will probably use this as a maquette for sketching out ideas to paint.

Off for coffee whilst the paper dries and to check what other WOYWW folk have done. Thanks again to Julia for hosting.

Just as a follow up to last week my friend Matt came round and collected his Christmas present

Painting Wiggle WOYWW 348

Back on the blog this week after having more men in last week 'doing the electrics'. I have set up my stuff on the table to finish painting Wiggle today as I have to have it completed by Friday. Wiggle came over here from Oz with her owner last year but unfortunately met with an accident and is no longer with us - so this has to be right. I'm half way there - just got the second eye to sort out and redefine the poodle coat. Note that I had to add some orange to the black dog. I have used the same water pot for over 30 years - disgusting but I can't chuck it away. The tablet has the original photo for reference and is great because you can zoom in - however I hate just working from a photo since the painting can become lifeless but it's all I have.

I am painting on a block cut from a 1" thick chipboard sheet with acrylics which I have put on stay-wet palette paper in an old cat litter tray - this way I can leave the paints overnight with the tray in a plastic bag and they are still workable. Since I am sitting to paint this I have to remember get up and move further away from time to time which is an excuse to go on the web to see other folks desks today.
