After missing a few weeks I'm back in the flow posting my workdesk. This is a rag rug cushion in progress made from old t-shirts that I started when I wasn't feeling too good a week ago - I hadn't got round to putting the stuff away from a demo I had done and so it was something I could do without really thinking about anything else - rag-rugging as therapy. I usually choose to hook through the hessian with long strips with my lovely Irish tool I've had for donkeys years.
My friend Pat from Spellbound Beads in Lichfield has given us some baubles that they cannot use in their kits because they are flawed so that we can find ways of using them on our craft days at Marie Curie - and also a lot of empty thread tubes to upcycle. My goodness, a porgy mat, I haven't seen that technique for years! I lived in Northumberland for many years and porgy mats were everywhere - there used to be a fantastic exhibition of them at the Woodhorn Museum near Ashington, I wonder if that's still there?!

They are still there. My hubby is a Geordie and we go up there a bit. We dropped into Woodhorn a couple of years ago for a Pitman painters exhibition. There was a banner from his grandads old pit a Dudley - super stuff

ReplyDeleteMy dad was a Geordie and we always took holidays visiting family up north. My Auntie Maggie taught me to do this ... kept me quiet I suppose!

I've never seen anything like your rag cushion cover! What a fantastic idea to use old T-shirts! I bet it's nice and soft as well. You got me thinking about those baubles - I would probably cover them with newspaper and then and paint them. Can't wait to see what you come up with! Enjoy your week! zsuzsa #24

If you want I can give you info in the size and materials I used (the images are from my sister as she is always sharing her coloured images from time to time as she colours so much better then me)to make them as I realized I never added that into my post. Your Tshirt cushion is beautiful I have always wanted to make one but never have gotten around to it. I love altering Christmas glass decorations years back I made snowmen heads and the carrots out of fimo that I glued on after baked. Oh what fun you are going to have making them. DeleteLove the bright colors of the rug! Awesome work! I tried rug hooking a while back and out to get it all out and try agin. Used pieces of wool and an oxford punch needle...expensive and time consuming but oh so much fun. Didn't see even a hint of aliens while in Roswell and commented on it to a local and got a snippy...how long will it take for us to live that down! She was convinced it was a government plot! Haha. Those are so lovely. I'd not heard the term Porgy before. My grandma used to make rag rugs, I can still picture one of them in front of the range in the kitchen.

Oh, that rag cushion is so great! I don't know how to do hooking like that, and it amazes me that it's something that you do without thinking about it. Enjoy the process!

ReplyDeleteGorgeous cushion, I've heard of rag rugs but never seen it done so beautifully, nor for cushions either. Your pattern reminds me of barge art which I love, with those vivid flowers against a dark background - really lovely.
