Saved from a skip beret WOYWW 356



Just finishing off a beret today made from wool cops rescued from a skip at college when they got rid of machine knitting classes. I remember at the time seeing knitting machines being thrown away - criminal. The wool is too fine to hand knit as is so I used 4 strands together and knitted a large rectangle that I then felted and cut up for the beret - the shapes are applied with free-machining. Now what to do with the rest? I just need to apply the binding to the edge - in this case some tape which was a handle on an upmarket carrier bag and luckily the right colour. Should be finished before I go to CRUNCH at lunchtime. Have a good Wednesday - if you want to check out other workdesks follow the link to Julia's page

    I hate seeing thing being thrown out & wasted. I think it because my parents didn't have much when we were growing up & was taught never to waste anything.

    How criminal that those machines were thrown out - such a lot of money is wasted like this. Great to see you recycling (or should it be upcycling?) and what a great beret you have made. Fab idea, fab result.

    Oh well done on your great skip rescue. I've just rescued three wire bread baskets which I'm going to use in the garden to display plants.

    Thrown away??!! Aaargh. I'm with you - would have hated to see perfectly good things being dumped. How wasteful we are. Glad you at least managed to get the wool. Great beret! Well done.

    I hate it when people throw perfectly good stuff away! They could have advertised it on Gumtree, free to collector or take it to the local scrap store. In Bristol there is a scrap store where businesses bring their stuff they throw out and teachers and children's group leaders can come and buy stuff at almost nothing prices (just to pay the rent of the venue). Our church had a membership card and we got quite a lot of stuff that kids could do something with.
    I love that beret. Very cleverly put together! Well done you!
